Agent Movie Review

Surender Reddy’s Agent Movie is a tough film. The way the story unfolds, it seems that the makers believe that they are presenting us with a unique story (actually it is not). From the outset, you’re thrown into chaos and while it all sounds interesting on paper, the execution feels half-baked.

Rikki (Akhil Akkineni) is not an ordinary guy who dreams of becoming a RAW Agent Movie. While his father (Murli Sharma) laments that he is wasting time, Ricky tries to join RAW and is rejected. He has a brilliant idea to attract the attention of RAW chief Mahadev (Mammootty) which sounds very silly to understand but obviously works as it is a commercial film.

He also falls in love with a NASA candidate (Sakshi Vaidya), who moves in and out of the story whenever it’s convenient. However, a syndicate called The God aka Dharma (Dino Morea) threatens to disrupt the Chief Devil’s peace, and The Wild One looks to do the same.

Rikki is a loose cannon who likes to do things her own way. Basically, he is the stranded Puri Jagannadh hero in Surender Reddy’s film. He is unpredictable, brash, rambunctious and to call him unlikable would be an understatement at times. The often used word ‘wild’ can become a pastime.

Despite all this, Ricky is never given a chance to reveal his insanity. At most he gets to do this three times. The rest of it is as predictable as anything except the expected moments from a spy thriller.

Just like the way Rikki’s love track sticks out like a sore thumb, so does Hiphop Tameezah’s music. Some songs are so oddly placed that you don’t know if they’re comfortable or downright disturbing. The BGM is an assault on the ears, so some of the key characters’ accents slip in randomly.

The biggest drawback of the film is in the emotional scenes. Although they all sound great on paper, none of them translate well on screen as you are never given enough time to absorb it all. Major revealed that the characters of Ricky, Satan and God are played on screen with such discomfort that you never quite grasp the importance of it. The silly climax and poor VFX only add to the suspense.

And it’s a shame because Akhil has had the time of his life playing Rikki and it shows on screen. Whether he is flaunting his six-pack or laughing hysterically or dancing through action sequences (you read that right) – he seems to be enjoying it all. Even if he overdoes it at times, he pulls off the character very well.

Sakshi looks adorable and does a good job, it’s a shame she doesn’t get a chance to do more. Mammootty is at ease in his role and while Dino Morea does his best to give some seriousness to his cookie-cutter counterpart. There are various other characters that plague the film, such as Varalakshmi Sarathkumar’s performance, which doesn’t really add up to anything.

Agent Movie  is an espionage thriller that condemns itself to be boring. And Akhil’s ‘wild’ performance may save the country but is not enough to save the film.
